Taronga Zoo is one of Australia's leading zoos with an international reputation for excellence in the fields of conservation, environmental education and care of wildlife. Opened in 1916, the Zoo's 28 hectares is home to more than 2000 animals - the largest collection of native and exotic animals in New South Wales. What we do We participate in global partnerships, regional recovery programs and research endeavours with breeding programs for a range of native and exotic species such as the Black Rhinoceros, Fijian Crested Iguana and the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. The Zoo provides a comprehensive program of environmental education to the community sharing our message with more than 1.2 million visitors each year. Taronga Zoo aims to promote positive conservation outcomes by inspiring exploration and discovery, and creating understanding and wonderment of our natural world.
